Francois Visser South Africa, b. 1979
Francois Visser’s work exists at the confluence of portrait, documentary, and landscape photography; nuanced with a minimalist undercurrent that traverses the discrete space between transient observer and subject. His images are defined by an interest in the workaday moments of daily life and people, and the beauty that is found in the sublime nestled in sensibility and experiment.
A self-taught photographer, Visser was drawn to photography as a way to seek out new experiences. An informal and pragmatic approach combined with a sensitivity to his environment fosters the authentic interactions that forms the foundation for his work. His choice of analogue photography as his primary medium lends itself to the considered frame of mind with which he approaches his art.
As he travels to unfamiliar places, greeting people along the way, encounters and fleeting conversations are crystallised through his photography. This approach allows for narratives and anecdotes to be woven through storytelling in his work painting colourful characters and wanderings.
