JC Bright Nigeria, b. 1994
Using primary colors as the foundation of his vibrant abstract paintings, JC Bright explores themes within familial relationships, lived experiences and Igbo values. Coming from an art history and painting background, the artist recalls his knowledge of neo-plasticism and abstract expressionism to implement a spontaneous and unconscious creative method of repetitive and irregular grids.
“For me, it is all about the colours. The colour is the form, it is the emotion, it is the guideline. It is about the subjective deduction upon encountering these primary shades and tones. It is about saying that I am painting with no structure, no configuration and that should be enough.”
JC Bright’s imagery is conceived as an emotional diary. Through his large coulourscapes, he invites viewers to an intimate journey that pays tribute to his relationship with his mother and honor her service and sacrifice that shaped the man he is today. Through his exploration of chromaticism, he discusses the pressures placed on African artists to be vocal promoters of their culture on the world stage. JC Bright believes in his creative freedom and shares his frustration of unequal expression while challenging the global perception of what African art should be.
